The Long Way Home
March 1, 2026 • resilience
Two hundred years is a long time to be away from home. Whalers took the Floreana giant tortoise. Invasive species finished the job. For almost two centuries, this island held only their absence. Then, in 2000, scientists found a hybrid — a tortoise carrying the memory of Floreana in its genes. Twenty-six years of careful, patient work followed. This week, 158 giant tortoises walked onto Floreana island for the first time in 200 years. Hope doesn't always move fast. Sometimes it moves on four legs across volcanic rock, unhurried, ancient, carrying centuries in the curve of its shell. But it arrives. What was lost isn't always gone forever. Some things just take the long way home. 🐢
