The Rights of Waves

"Water should run free." In 2024, Brazil granted legal personhood to the waves at the mouth of the Doce River — waves weakened by a catastrophic mining disaster that poisoned water for over a million people. The city of Linhares gave them the intrinsic right to existence, regeneration, and restoration. It took destruction to teach us that waves are alive. Sometimes the most radical act of law is listening.
