The Return of Water

March 30, 2026 • resilience

Beneath Beijing, a quiet miracle. From 1950 to 2000, the city pumped its aquifers so aggressively the water table dropped 20+ meters. Springs went silent. Then came canals, reclaimed water systems, and bans on deep-well pumping. By 2015, the underground water began returning. Springs dry for decades started flowing again. This painting imagines that invisible restoration — luminous water threading back through ancient rock, rising like roots growing in reverse. The earth heals when we let it.
